Introduction to the Reading Club
Would you like to have family happiness? Would you like to be blessed with love? Would you like to attain wealth? Would you like to unlock the door to wisdom? Fanyin takes you along to meet with the undiscovered happiness. Within this finite life, living is not only about the present but also religion. In religion, there exists a greater world. The "comprehension" we think we know sometimes, may be one type of "lost chance", the appeal of religion does not lie in retreating and living in a reclusive life, but to live in the present in a better way.
Fanyin Reading Club was initiated by charitable people in the form of a book club in order to provide a free platform for the exchange of ideas. The Reading Club calls on everyone to altogether study books of morality and nourish the mind once per week, so that the study of Dharma becomes a way for life-changing. The Buddhist knowledge compiled by the Reading Club is from simple to more complex, gradually progresses in an incremental approach. People from all walks of life and Buddhist disciples will come to understand Dharma’s integration into life, as well as learn and practice through work, establish a highly effective and beneficial mindset, resolve worries in one’s own life with true application of Dharma; encourage each other and make progress together with benevolent friends through mutual exchange.

"The Memoirs of the Western Odyssey" - I hope that the teachings of His Holiness in this book can be seen by people from many countries, as it is a very meaningful endeavor. From the book, we can learn about how such a spiritual teacher, thirty years ago, embarked on a journey to the West to spread the truth, how the itinerary was arranged, and in what manner he taught the Dharma to the public on various occasions. Those who wish to engage in genuine practice and realization, those who wish to expound scriptures and teachings, and those who plan to speak and visit various countries can benefit from this book.
This winter, I have devoted almost all my time to writing "The Memoirs of the Western Odyssey." Now, whenever any part of the book is mentioned, its contents can easily come to mind. In comparison to all the books I have translated and authored, this should be the one to which I have dedicated the most time and effort.
For "The Memoirs of the Western Odyssey," everyone should give it due importance. Although it may not have as many narrative stories as "The Chronicles of Dream Dust," it contains numerous precious insights into the spiritual practices of the spiritual teacher, such as "Manjushri's Serene Completion of Meditation: Bestowing the Buddha with the Hand," "Vajra in the Shoulder Bag," "Fierce Lotus Guru," and so on. These insights, which His Holiness rarely disclosed in Asia but shared in the West, make this book highly anticipated.

The origin of the establishment of Fanyin Reading Club by Master Rinpoche Khenpo Jamyang
When I was young, perhaps it was a habit from my previous life, I’ve loved reading very much; and every time when my teacher taught me Tibetan, I would get very excited.Whenever the teacher finished a lesson, I would review repeatedly, as a result, I was also learning at a very fast pace. But at that time books were very rare, and I always felt that people who could own a book were greatly blessed with karmic reward, my heart was very envious and filled with yearning.
My teacher was someone who fully realizes the ultimate mind, he would often give me a yellowing Buddhist book that had been treasured for a long time for me to study in secret. During the day I had some herding works to do, it was not easy to read when many people were around; and since my family was poor with no extra candles and oil lamps, I could only rely on the help of the moonlight to read at night, by the time from sundown until the moon shone bright enough to see clearly, it was already very late, however, I never feel sleepy at all, and the delight in my heart was indescribable. Even so, books were still pitifully scarce. I began to borrow other people's books, very few people would be willing to lend books to me because everyone cherished his/her own books and worried that I might damage the books; so I would take the opportunity to do some household chores for them, when they were pleased enough to let me read for a while, I would then go home and recite repeatedly, for the fear that I might forget.
Later, I went to Hongyuan County to attend school, at that time, Buddhist books were already not too controlled, but due to printing and transportation were not yet well developed, the access to books was still very difficult, even if it was available, the cost needed was very high. Therefore, I would take notes at night by recollecting what the teacher said during the day. As I was taking notes, oftentimes my arms would freeze during the very cold winter; as a result, my fingers couldn't move and I was not able to write, yet I was concerned that I might forget, so I would just do it off and on. Occasionally a book was on loan to me, I would make the best use of my time to copy it down.
It is hard for people of this generation to imagine our yearning for books at that time. On the contrary, people don't value reading anymore as there are many more books nowadays. Even though there is much information infiltration every day, the knowledge that can help us solving problems is becoming decreasingly emphasized. Since I have experienced the importance of learning, however, many children in Tibetan areas do not want to study. I founded the Kamba Caring Welfare School, which has enabled many children to get into study and begin to have a longing for knowledge. This also allows me to see the hope of their future.
Today many people in Inner China wish to understand Buddhism, many people mistakenly consider that Buddhism is a superstition. I think this is what we need to learn in order to understand the contents and elements explained in Buddhism, then we will know that this knowledge is the most important wisdom for mankind. Without learning, whether for those who wish to know or those who misunderstand, no actual benefits can be attained, since the Buddha also said that only through the Dharma can He actually help all people, therefore I wish to set up a reading club at the Fanyin Buddhist Evangelism Center.
Essentially, many great Buddhist masters all over the world have been spreading Dharma. My personal ability is extremely limited. I have also thought for a long time whether or not to set up this reading club? I believe no matter what, personally I have studied Dharma for several decades, and have followed my teacher to promote Dharma for more than twenty years. I have also communicated with many disciples of the fourfold assembly (catu parisa) about the extensive and profound Dharma. I have some understanding and realization of my own. I believe that this information can help with the many needs of coping with sufferings such as matters related to birth, ageing, illness and death; as well as love and marriage.
I therefore arranged Buddhist books targeted for all to learn with different themes each session to help demystify and enlighten, enable real life application with the Dharma, help everyone resolve the demands of the material society, and experience the freedom of the spiritual world without being bound by worries. I hope that the reading club will gain widespread presence, so that more people may benefit from the wisdom of the Dharma.
